Total Enzymes Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Nutri-West
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Total Enzymes against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Total Enzymes by Nutri-West
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Total Enzymes contains eight ingredients, including six digestive enzymes — amylase, protease, lipase, lactase, cellulase, invertase, and diastase — plus pure beet root fiber. These enzymes are meant to help your body break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
Lactase specifically helps digest lactose (the sugar in milk); the others work on different food components. The product has no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase in this product is effective for lactose intolerance — that's the established use. For the other enzymes, we don't hold effectiveness ratings in our data.
Beet root fiber shows possibly effective evidence for athletic performance and exercise-induced muscle soreness, though the evidence is not conclusive. For other uses like dyslipidemia or cognitive function, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Protease, lipase, and lactase are generally well tolerated in most adults. Rare allergic reactions have been reported to protease — including allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma — mostly in workers exposed to airborne forms.
Lipase can cause digestive upset; people with serious digestive conditions should use it only under medical guidance. Beet root fiber is generally well tolerated, though large amounts could theoretically cause red or black stools (harmless discoloration) or, very rarely, low blood calcium or kidney damage.
For pregnancy: protease safety has not been established and should be avoided unless prescribed; lipase has little safety data, so use only if your doctor advises it; lactase is likely safe; and beet as a food is fine, but concentrated beet supplements lack safety data in pregnancy — talk with your doctor. For breastfeeding: protease and lipase have little data, so medical advice is needed; lactase acts only in the gut and limited data suggests it may be okay, but check with your provider first; beet supplements during breastfeeding also need discussion with your healthcare provider.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Total Enzymes, double-check your medications if you take drugs broken down by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 (Moderate severity) — these include some heart medications, statins, and immunosuppressants. Also watch if you're on blood pressure medications or drugs processed by the CYP1A2 liver enzyme (both Minor severity).
Use the medication checker below to verify your specific drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with lactose intolerance and possibly athletic performance, but it interacts with a large number of medications through beet root fiber — particularly drugs processed by your liver. If you take any prescription medications, especially heart drugs, immunosuppressants, or blood pressure medications, check them against the interaction tool on this page before starting.
Talk with your pharmacist or doctor if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have digestive conditions.

Pure Beet root Fiber monograph & interactionsTotal Enzymes by Nutri-West Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Total Enzymes by Nutri-West contains eight ingredients — several of which we could not check for interactions — and one that does interact with medications.
Beet root fiber is the ingredient of concern. It may increase levels of a large group of drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme (called CYP3A4 substrates), which includes some heart medications, immunosuppressants, and statins.
This is a Moderate severity risk, meaning the effect could be noticeable.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beet root fiber also has Minor-severity interactions with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) and another liver enzyme group, CYP1A2 substrates. The blood pressure effect is likely small — research on concentrated beetroot juice found no significant change in blood pressure in different age groups — but it's worth knowing about.
The other checked ingredients — protease, lipase, and lactase — have no documented interactions with medications. We could not check amylase, cellulase, invertase, or diastase; we hold no interaction data for these.
Altogether, these interactions span 850 individual medications.
Before you start this product, use the medication checker below to verify your specific drugs against the beet interactions.

pure Beet root Fiber
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Beet and beetroot contain nitrates, which can cause vasodilation, potentially leading to lower blood pressure. However, a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition using concentrated beetroot juice found no significant impact on blood pressure or heart rate in different age groups. Other small clinical studies suggest that while beet consumption might transiently lower blood pressure due to vessel dilation, there's no consistent evidence of a lasting effect. Overall, the theoretical risk of reduced blood pressure due to beet's nitrate content exists, but studies generally indicate a low and temporary impact rather than a sustained decrease.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that beet induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
