How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pepsin and papain are generally well tolerated when used as directed, though both can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people — including digestive upset, itchy eyes, sneezing, or even respiratory symptoms with airborne exposure. Betaine HCl may irritate the stomach and is not safe if you have ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux (it could make heartburn worse).
During pregnancy, the safety data advises against betaine HCl and concentrated papain; pepsin safety has not been established during pregnancy, so medical advice is needed. During breastfeeding, betaine HCl and papain are not recommended without guidance from your doctor or pharmacist, and pepsin data is insufficient.
