Betaine Hydrochloride and Rabeprazole Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPIs)

Why this applies to Rabeprazole Sodium

Rabeprazole Sodium falls under PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPIs) — the group Betaine Hydrochloride interacts with.

Betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity and could decrease the effects of PPIs.
In human research, betaine hydrochloride increases stomach acidity. PPIs are used to decrease stomach acidity. Theoretically, taking betaine hydrochloride along with PPIs might decrease the effects of PPIs
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: rabeprazole (Aciphex) works by turning down how much acid your stomach makes, which is what calms heartburn and lets an irritated esophagus heal. Betaine hydrochloride does the opposite, it adds acid back into your stomach. So putting the two together is a bit like pressing the gas and the brake at the same time. In theory, the extra acid could work against your rabeprazole and you might notice more heartburn, burning, or reflux symptoms creeping back.

That said, this concern is based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not strong studies, and it's rated minor. Honestly, it rarely makes sense to take an acid supplement while you're on an acid-lowering medicine for the same problem. If you feel you need betaine HCl, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Rabeprazole

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Aciphex, Aciphex Sprinkle

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets (sold as AcipHex and as Rabeprazole Sodium) lower stomach acid. In adults, they are used for several conditions. These include healing erosive or ulcerative GERD, keeping it healed, and treating heartburn and other GERD symptoms.

They are also used to heal duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the first part of the small intestine). With the antibiotics amoxicillin and clarithromycin, they treat H. pylori infection in people with duodenal ulcer disease. They are also used long-term for conditions that cause too much stomach acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Adolescents 12 and older can take them for up to 8 weeks for symptomatic GERD.
