Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, since these are live organisms, there's a theoretical concern they could cause infection in some people — cases of bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream), sepsis, and other serious infections have been rarely reported, though most happen when bacteria move from places where they normally live.

Stomach side effects like bloating, gas, discomfort, and loose stools can happen when you take these probiotics with other probiotic strains, but they're uncommon. A couple of rashes were reported in one trial, though it's unclear what caused them.
