What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 6 active ingredients.

This capsule contains six active ingredients: Fructo-oligosaccharide (a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria), Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus casei — all live probiotic bacteria meant to support your vaginal and digestive health. The supplement also contains acacia gum as an inactive ingredient.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: vaginal health support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Bacterial vaginosis, Vaginal candidiasis, Vulvovaginal infections, Vaginal microbiome balance.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Vaginal candidiasis.

The evidence here is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis — so there's some clinical backing for those uses.

For atopic disease (allergic conditions), it's rated possibly ineffective. For acute respiratory distress syndrome, the evidence isn't established in the data we hold.

We don't have effectiveness ratings for the other probiotic strains or the prebiotic fiber, so we can't say how they perform.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 2 of the 2 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 2 of 2.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 2 of 2.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The most common side effects from probiotics are mild gastrointestinal ones — abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea — though these are uncommon.

Very rarely, L. acidophilus has caused serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis, endocarditis, meningoencephalitis) in vulnerable patients, though this is thought to happen when bacteria already present in the body elsewhere shift to the bloodstream. Fructo-oligosaccharide can cause gas, bloating, and abdominal pain, especially at higher doses, but studies show doses under 10 grams daily don't increase these symptoms more than placebo.

Since supplement-level doses of FOS aren't well studied long-term, check with your doctor before use. We don't have pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data on file for these ingredients, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor for personalized advice if you're pregnant or nursing.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 2 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 182 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Moderate concern: antibiotics. The live bacteria in this product may be killed by antibiotic drugs, reducing the supplement's effect — space out your doses and ask your pharmacist for a timing plan.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This product may help with bacterial vaginosis or antibiotic-associated diarrhea if you choose to try it — L. acidophilus has some clinical support for those. If you're on antibiotics, time your doses carefully so they don't cancel each other out.

Healthy adults usually tolerate probiotics well, but if you have a weakened immune system or serious underlying illness, ask your doctor first.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Vaginal Health by SuperSmart: Common Questions

Does Vaginal Health by SuperSmart interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Vaginal Health has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Vaginal Health contains 6 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this work for bacterial vaginosis?
Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product is rated possibly effective for bacterial vaginosis, so there's some clinical evidence backing it. That said, bacterial vaginosis often needs prescription treatment — talk to your doctor about whether this supplement fits into your care plan.
What if I'm taking antibiotics — can I use this at the same time?
Not simultaneously. Antibiotics will kill the live bacteria in this supplement, which defeats the purpose. Space out your antibiotic dose and this product by at least a couple of hours, and ask your pharmacist for the best schedule for your specific drugs.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant?
We don't have pregnancy safety data on file for these ingredients. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist — they can weigh the potential benefits against what's known and help you decide what's right for you.
What are the side effects?
Most common are mild — gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea — and they're uncommon at typical doses. Serious infections from L. acidophilus are very rare and usually only happen in people with weakened immune systems.
What's the prebiotic fiber for?
Fructo-oligosaccharide feeds the beneficial bacteria in the product so they can thrive in your gut. We don't have strong evidence yet for what it accomplishes on its own, though, so that part is still being studied.
Do I need to refrigerate this?
We don't have storage information on file, so check the label or ask the manufacturer — that matters a lot for keeping the live bacteria alive and active.
