Wild Cherry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Wild Cherry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried wild cherry bark extract. Wild cherry has been used traditionally for respiratory symptoms, though the effectiveness evidence in our data is not established.
The liquid also contains ethyl alcohol, distilled water, and vegetable glycerin as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for wild cherry's effectiveness is not established in the data we hold. It's been used traditionally in herbal medicine, but we don't have formal effectiveness ratings for it in our records.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wild cherry is generally considered safe in small amounts as found in over-the-counter cough products, but the plant contains compounds that can form cyanide. Large amounts carry a real risk: consuming around 300 grams of wild cherries steeped in alcohol has caused severe poisoning with headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, difficulty breathing, coma, and weakness.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any medications metabolized by the CYP3A4 liver enzyme before taking this product — that includes cholesterol drugs, antifungals, and many others. Although the interaction has not been reported in humans, in vitro research suggests wild cherry may raise their levels in your blood.
Run your exact drugs through the search tool on this page, and confirm with your pharmacist or doctor.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is a single-ingredient herbal extract with a theoretical interaction affecting a very large number of medications — mainly because of how the liver processes them. If you take any regular medications, especially for heart, blood pressure, mood, or immune function, you'll want to check them against the interaction tool here and discuss it with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Avoid large amounts, and don't use it while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Wild Cherry by Herbalist & Alchemist Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Wild Cherry by Herbalist & Alchemist has a documented interaction with a large class of medications.
Through its wild cherry bark extract, it may increase levels of drugs broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 (cytochrome P450 3A4 substrates). In lab studies, wild cherry appears to slow how your liver clears these drugs, which could raise them to higher-than-intended levels in your blood.
However, this hasn't been observed in actual patients yet — the risk is theoretical at this point.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 644 individual medications. The affected drugs include cholesterol medications like lovastatin, antifungals like ketoconazole and itraconazole, and many others processed by that same liver pathway.
Before you start this product, check your exact medications with the tool on this page, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist — especially if you take any heart, blood pressure, psychiatric, or immunosuppressant medications.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and others.
