Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Wild Yam Extract. It's a liquid form, which means the extract is already dissolved and ready to dose — no powder to mix.

The only other ingredient listed is the liquid base itself; there are no added fillers or binders.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Leans against

The strongest graded evidence we hold for the stated purpose leans against a benefit.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Hormone balance and menopausal support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Menopausal symptoms, Postmenopausal conditions, Dysmenorrhea, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Hormone regulation, Menstrual health — and 1 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Wild Yam is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Menopausal symptoms (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Wild Yam is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Postmenopausal conditions, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Dysmenorrhea.

The evidence for wild yam is mixed. For menopausal symptoms, it's rated possibly ineffective — meaning trials haven't shown it works well for hot flashes or other menopause-related complaints.

For gallbladder disease, sexual dysfunction, period pain (dysmenorrhea), and infertility, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't. If you're considering wild yam for any of these purposes, talk with your pharmacist about whether the evidence fits your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Wild yam is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but how safe it is over the long haul isn't well studied. The most common side effects are headache, fever, upset stomach, and vomiting — especially at higher doses.

A rare serious effect (anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction) has been reported but is very uncommon. One case report linked a combination product containing wild yam to temporary vision loss, though it's unclear whether wild yam itself was responsible.

There isn't enough safety data to use wild yam during pregnancy or while breastfeeding; the safety data advises against it in both situations.

How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Wild Yam Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does wild yam really help with hot flashes and night sweats?
The evidence says it's possibly ineffective for menopausal symptoms. Trials haven't shown it relieves hot flashes or other menopause complaints well, so there are better-studied options to consider first.

Is it safe to take wild yam long-term?
Short-term use in healthy adults is likely fine, but we don't have good safety data for long-term use. If you're thinking of taking it regularly for months or years, ask your pharmacist whether that makes sense for you.
Can I take wild yam if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — there isn't enough safety data. The safety information advises against it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's right for your situation.
What does wild yam extract actually do?
It's used for menopause symptoms, sexual function, period pain, and fertility, but the evidence that it works is weak or absent for all of those. Your best bet is to check with your pharmacist about whether wild yam fits what you're trying to address.
