Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product is a single-ingredient supplement: wild yam root extract powder. Wild yam has a long history in traditional herbalism and is often used by people looking to support comfort during hormonal transitions, though the scientific evidence for its effectiveness is limited.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Wild Yam's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Supports women health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Menopausal symptoms, Dysmenorrhea, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Postmenopausal conditions, Hormone balance, Menstrual health.
  • The closest evidence on file: Wild Yam is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Menopausal symptoms (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Wild Yam is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Postmenopausal conditions, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Dysmenorrhea.

The evidence supporting wild yam for menopausal symptoms is rated possibly ineffective. For other conditions people take it for—gallbladder disease, sexual dysfunction, difficult menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea), and infertility—we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.

The research is simply too thin or inconclusive on those fronts right now.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Wild yam is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in the short term for healthy adults. The most common side effects are fever, headache, upset stomach, and vomiting, especially at higher doses.

A rare serious reaction—anaphylaxis—has been reported. There isn't enough safety data to recommend this during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

One case report documented vision loss in someone taking a multi-ingredient blend that included wild yam, though it's unclear whether wild yam was the culprit. Long-term safety hasn't been well studied.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Wild Yam.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.

Check any estrogen-containing medications—birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, or estrogen patches—before using this product. Wild yam might interfere with how your body processes these drugs, potentially weakening or strengthening their effects.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Wild yam may appeal to you if you're exploring herbal options for hormonal support, but the research doesn't support its use for menopausal symptoms, and evidence for other uses is thin. The key concern is its potential interaction with estrogen medications.

If you take any hormone therapy or birth control, talk to your pharmacist before adding this supplement.

Wild Yam Extract by Herbadiet: Common Questions

Does Wild Yam Extract by Herbadiet interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Wild Yam Extract has a known interaction with 41 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Wild Yam Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does wild yam really help with hot flashes and night sweats?
The evidence suggests it probably doesn't. Research rates wild yam as possibly ineffective for menopausal symptoms, so if that's why you're considering it, it's worth exploring other options first.
What are the most common side effects?
Fever, headache, upset stomach, and vomiting—especially if you take higher doses. Most people tolerate it without problems, but these can happen.
Is it safe to use long-term?
There's good safety data for short-term use in healthy adults, but we don't know much about what happens if you take it for months or years. That's a conversation worth having with your pharmacist.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data isn't there to say yes. We don't have enough information, so we advise against it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's right for your situation.
Can wild yam affect my birth control?
Possibly. Wild yam shows estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects, which means it might change how your body handles estrogen medications, including birth control. Check with your pharmacist about your specific medication before starting this.
