HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Wormwood 450 mg by Nutricost
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: sweet wormwood at 450 mg per capsule. Sweet wormwood (also called Sweet Annie) has been used traditionally, particularly for malaria and hay fever symptoms.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable material and contains olive oil as an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for sweet wormwood is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever).
For nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and osteoarthritis, the evidence isn't established enough in our data to say whether it works. For malaria, similarly, there isn't reliable evidence we can point to.
Because this supplement is generally used short-term and quality varies widely, it shouldn't replace proven treatments for any of these conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taken by mouth, sweet wormwood is generally well tolerated. The most common side effect is nausea and vomiting.
Rarely, it may cause liver injury — one case reported hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes after taking the artemisinin component, though symptoms resolved within two weeks of stopping. A mild allergic reaction (rash and cough) has been reported in one person drinking sweet wormwood tea.
Avoid this supplement during pregnancy because of possible harm to a developing baby. There isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding, so skip it then too.
Because of the liver concerns, be cautious if you take other medications or supplements that stress the liver.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs), or any medication broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. These are Moderate-severity interactions and could change how your drugs work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sweet wormwood may help with hay fever symptoms, but the evidence is still developing and it shouldn't replace proven treatments. If you take any medications that affect or are processed by the liver, or anything metabolized by the CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 pathways, check with your pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real.
Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Wormwood 450 mg by Nutricost Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Wormwood 450 mg by Nutricost contains sweet wormwood, which has documented interactions with medications.
The main concern is with drugs that stress the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) — using this supplement alongside them might add to that liver burden, a Moderate-severity risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sweet wormwood may also change how your body processes drugs broken down by two liver enzymes called CYP3A4 and CYP2B6. Lab research shows the ingredient artemisinin (found in sweet wormwood) can rev these enzymes up by roughly 1.6- to 1.9-fold, but other parts of the extract may slow them down instead.
That unpredictability means drugs metabolized by these pathways could end up at higher or lower levels in your blood, affecting how well they work — both rated Moderate severity.
Altogether, these interactions span 870 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to search your exact prescriptions before starting.

Sweet Wormwood
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP2B6 substrates.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive adverse hepatotoxic effects.
There is some concern that Sweet Annie can adversely affect the liver.
