Clinical
Senna is used on a short-term basis to treat constipation. It also is used to empty the bowels before surgery and certain medical procedures. Senna is in a class of medications called stimulant laxatives. It works by increasing activity of the intestines to cause a bowel movement.
Read the full MedlinePlus article ↗This is an over-the-counter coated tablet taken by mouth that combines two active ingredients commonly used to relieve constipation. Docusate sodium functions as a stool softener, helping to make bowel movements easier by increasing water retention in stool. Sennosides are a natural plant-derived laxative that typically stimulates bowel movement. Together, these ingredients are often used for occasional constipation relief.
