Why is Furosemide Injection in shortage?
Furosemide injection is on the FDA shortage list for several different reasons, depending on the manufacturer. Gland Pharma (distributed by Sagent Pharmaceuticals) has permanently stopped making their 10 mg/1 mL vials — this isn't a temporary delay, those specific products are discontinued. Accord Healthcare's 10 mg/1 mL vials are currently unavailable due to issues meeting FDA manufacturing standards (called "good manufacturing practices"), with no recovery date set yet. Avet Pharmaceuticals also has two of their 10 mg/1 mL package sizes on hold because of a manufacturing delay, with an estimated return around the end of October 2026 — though one of their 10 mg/1 mL sizes is still available.
Hospira (a Pfizer company) is dealing with manufacturing delays as well — their 20 mg/2 mL and 40 mg/4 mL vials (in certain package sizes) aren't expected back until December 2027, and one of their 100 mg/10 mL package sizes not until December 2028, though some other Hospira package sizes of those same strengths are still available. On top of all this, Eugia US LLC's 20 mg/2 mL vials are on backorder due to higher-than-usual demand, with no set return date — while their 40 mg/4 mL and 100 mg/10 mL sizes remain available. So the shortage is really a combination of factory hold-ups, manufacturing standards issues, permanently stopped products, and increased demand all hitting at once across multiple makers.
