What happens

Increased morphine exposure, increased trospium exposure and an increased risk of urinary retention, constipation and paralytic ileus

Interaction Deep Dive

Both morphine and trospium are mainly excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and active tubular secretion. Coadministration of these agents may result in increased exposure of either drug due to competition for tubular secretion, thereby decreasing renal clearance7. Concurrent use of morphine and an anticholinergic agent, such as trospium, may also result in increased urinary retention or severe constipation, which may lead to paralytic ileus. If concomitant use is required, monitor patients for signs of urinary retention and reductions in gastric motility 615432.
