Why this applies to Bexarotene

Bexarotene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.

In vitro evidence shows that African wild potato extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme activity by up to 86%. Theoretically, African wild potato might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, in human research, African wild potato does not seem to affect the pharmacokinetics of Efavirenz, a CYP3A4 substrate. Until more is known, use African wild potato cautiously or avoid in patients taking drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the basic idea with bexarotene (Targretin). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this medication. In a test-tube study, African Wild Potato slowed that enzyme quite a bit. In theory, that could let bexarotene build up in your body, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects, such as high triglycerides or cholesterol, low thyroid levels, headaches, or low white blood cell counts.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is only laboratory data, not a real-world human study, and when researchers tested the supplement with another CYP3A4 drug in people, it didn't change those levels. So this is a cautionary, possible concern, not a proven one. Since bexarotene is a serious cancer medicine, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding this supplement.

What Is Bexarotene Used For?

Brand name: Targretin

Bexarotene capsules (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients whose disease has not responded to at least one prior systemic treatment.

Bexarotene gel 1% (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) is used to treat the skin lesions of early-stage CTCL (Stage IA and IB) when other therapies have not worked or could not be tolerated. The gel is a topical therapy and is not intended for systemic use.
