Why this applies to Dutasteride

Dutasteride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.

In vitro evidence shows that African wild potato extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme activity by up to 86%. Theoretically, African wild potato might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, in human research, African wild potato does not seem to affect the pharmacokinetics of Efavirenz, a CYP3A4 substrate. Until more is known, use African wild potato cautiously or avoid in patients taking drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the short version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down dutasteride. In test-tube studies, African wild potato slowed that same enzyme quite a bit. In theory, that could let dutasteride hang around longer and build up, which might mean a bit more of its usual effects, things like lowered sex drive, trouble with erections, or some breast tenderness.

Now, the honest part: this concern comes only from lab work, not from people. When researchers tested the supplement with an actual CYP3A4 medication in humans, it didn't really change drug levels. Dutasteride is also forgiving and works slowly, so a small shift is unlikely to cause harm. Still, since the safety of this supplement isn't well studied, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

About Dutasteride

What Is Dutasteride Used For?

Brand name: Avodart

Dutasteride capsules are used to treat symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate — in men. Treatment can help improve urinary symptoms, lower the risk of sudden urinary retention (being completely unable to urinate), and reduce the likelihood of needing BPH-related surgery.

Dutasteride capsules can also be used in combination with tamsulosin (an alpha-blocker) to treat symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. Importantly, dutasteride is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
