Why this applies to Finasteride

Finasteride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.

In vitro evidence shows that African wild potato extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme activity by up to 86%. Theoretically, African wild potato might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, in human research, African wild potato does not seem to affect the pharmacokinetics of Efavirenz, a CYP3A4 substrate. Until more is known, use African wild potato cautiously or avoid in patients taking drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down finasteride. In lab dish studies, African wild potato slowed that enzyme down quite a bit. In theory, that could let more finasteride hang around in your system, which might mean a little more of its usual effects, things like reduced sex drive, trouble with erections, or breast tenderness.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only test-tube evidence, and when researchers tested the plant with a similar CYP3A4 drug in real people, it didn't change the drug's levels much. So the real-world risk looks low. Still, since finasteride is a long-term medication, it's worth running this combination past your pharmacist or doctor before you start the supplement.

About Finasteride

What Is Finasteride Used For?

Brand names: Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride tablets (including the brand Proscar) are used in men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) to improve urinary symptoms, lower the risk of acute urinary retention (a sudden inability to urinate), and reduce the need for prostate surgery. Finasteride tablets may also be used alongside the alpha-blocker doxazosin to slow the progression of BPH symptoms.

Propecia (and finasteride 1 mg coated tablets) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Propecia is not approved for use in women, and its effectiveness for hair loss at the temples has not been established. Finasteride is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
