Why this applies to Tasimelteon

Tasimelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group African Wild Potato interacts with.

In vitro research shows that African wild potato extract inhibits cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). However, this effect has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, concomitant use of African wild potato with CYP1A2 substrates might increase the risk for adverse effects from these substrates. Some of these drugs include amitriptyline (Elavil), haloperidol (Haldol), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), theophylline (Theo-Dur, others), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, others), and others.

Here's the gist for Hetlioz (tasimelteon). Your body clears this sleep medication mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. African Wild Potato has been shown, so far only in lab dish studies, to slow that same enzyme down. If that slowdown actually happened in people, tasimelteon could linger longer than usual and hit harder.

In practice, that might mean stronger next-morning grogginess, lingering drowsiness, headache, or odd dreams. The important thing to keep in mind is that this is purely theoretical right now, based on test-tube work and not seen in real patients, so I wouldn't panic. Still, since the two haven't been studied together, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. Don't change your dose on your own.

Tasimelteon also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

In vitro evidence shows that African wild potato extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme activity by up to 86%. Theoretically, African wild potato might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, in human research, African wild potato does not seem to affect the pharmacokinetics of Efavirenz, a CYP3A4 substrate. Until more is known, use African wild potato cautiously or avoid in patients taking drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for Hetlioz (tasimelteon). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break this medicine down. In test-tube studies, African Wild Potato slowed that enzyme quite a bit. In theory, that could let tasimelteon build up a little more than usual, which might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like next-morning drowsiness, grogginess, or a bit of a headache.

Now, the honest part: this is based on lab work, not real people, and in one human study the plant didn't change levels of a similar drug. So I wouldn't panic. Still, since the two haven't been studied together, it's smart to run this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

What Is Tasimelteon Used For?

Brand names: Hetlioz, Hetlioz Lq

Tasimelteon capsules are approved to treat Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder (Non-24) in adults. Non-24 is a condition where the body's internal clock does not align with the normal 24-hour day, causing sleep and wake times to shift continuously.

Hetlioz capsules are also approved to treat nighttime sleep disturbances in Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) in patients 16 years of age and older. Hetlioz LQ oral suspension is approved specifically for nighttime sleep disturbances in SMS in pediatric patients ages 3 to 15 years.
