Brexpiprazole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the gist with agar and Rexulti (brexpiprazole). Agar is a fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. The thought is that this gel could grab onto a pill you swallow at the same time and slow or slightly lower how much of it gets absorbed. With brexpiprazole, less absorption could in theory mean a weaker effect, meaning your schizophrenia or depression symptoms might not be controlled as well.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern. It comes from animal feeding studies using diets that were 5 to 10 percent agar, which is far more than a normal serving. Occasional food amounts are unlikely to matter. If you take agar as a fiber supplement, a simple fix is to separate it from your brexpiprazole by a couple of hours. Run it by your pharmacist first.

What Is Brexpiprazole Used For?

Brand name: Rexulti

Brexpiprazole tablets are approved for two uses in adults: as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment alongside antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD), and as a treatment for schizophrenia. These uses apply to both the generic brexpiprazole tablets and Rexulti.

Rexulti has one additional approved use: treating agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease in adults. Rexulti is also approved for schizophrenia in adolescents ages 13 and older. Note that Rexulti is not approved for dementia-related psychosis without agitation from Alzheimer's disease, and it is not meant to be used on an as-needed basis for Alzheimer's-related agitation.
