Cladribine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

If you take the tablet form of cladribine (Mavenclad) for MS, here's the simple version. Algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill and slow or slightly reduce how much of the drug your body soaks up. With cladribine, less absorption could mean a bit less of the medicine getting where it needs to go, though this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real patient reports.

Because cladribine is dosed in a very specific, carefully timed way, I'd keep things separated to be safe. A good habit is to take your cladribine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any algin product. Run it by your pharmacist or MS team before mixing the two.

What Is Cladribine Used For?

Brand names: Leustatin, Mavenclad

Cladribine tablets (brand name Mavenclad) are used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults — specifically relapsing-remitting MS and active secondary progressive MS. Because of its significant safety profile, it is generally reserved for patients who haven't responded well to, or can't tolerate, other MS medicines. It is not recommended for clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), a first episode that may or may not lead to MS.

Cladribine injection (given intravenously) is a separate product used to treat active hairy cell leukemia — a rare blood cancer — in patients who have clinically significant anemia, low white blood cell counts, low platelets, or disease-related symptoms.
