Bupropion falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the practical picture with bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) and algin. Algin is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is purely physical: that gel could trap a little of your bupropion in the gut and keep some of it from being absorbed. This isn't about how your liver breaks the drug down, and bupropion isn't a prodrug, so we're only talking about how much actually gets into your system.

To be clear, this is a theoretical, minor concern based on lab work, not real-world reports of people having problems. Still, if absorption dipped, your antidepressant or quit-smoking benefit could be slightly weaker. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your bupropion first, then the algin 30 to 60 minutes later. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Is Bupropion Used For?

Brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, Forfivo XL

Bupropion is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) — a form of clinical depression. Extended-release formulations (XL and hydrobromide versions, including Aplenzin) are also approved for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the pattern of depression that tends to arrive in autumn and winter.

Not all formulations share every indication. Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide extended-release) and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (XL) are indicated for both MDD and SAD. Bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (SR) and bupropion hydrochloride immediate-release tablets are indicated for MDD only.
