Phentermine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thinking on Algin and your phentermine. Algin is basically a seaweed fiber that soaks up water and turns into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is purely about timing and absorption: that gel could trap a little of your phentermine and keep your body from absorbing all of it. If that happens, your dose might work a bit less well, meaning slightly weaker appetite control. Phentermine is not a prodrug, so there's no flip here.

Honestly, this one is theoretical and rated minor, based on lab work rather than real patient problems. An easy fix is to space them out: take your phentermine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the algin. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you set up a schedule.

Phentermine is approved as a short-term addition to a weight-loss program — not a standalone treatment. It is used alongside reduced-calorie eating, increased physical activity, and behavior changes to help manage obesity in adults whose body mass index (BMI) is 30 kg/m² or higher, or 27 kg/m² or higher when other risk factors such as controlled high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) are also present.

All available phentermine products — including Adipex-P, Lomaira, and various generic capsules and tablets — share this same FDA-approved use. Lomaira tablets are specifically dosed to be taken three times daily before meals, while other formulations are generally taken once daily. Treatment is intended to last only a few weeks.
