Didanosine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with didanosine (Videx) and algin. Algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that soaks up water and forms a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could trap some of your medicine and slow or lower how much gets absorbed into your bloodstream. For an HIV medicine, that matters, because if too little gets in, the virus has a chance to keep replicating, and that can chip away at how well your treatment works over time.

I'll be honest though, this concern is theoretical and comes from lab work, not from real cases of treatment failure. To be safe, separate them: take your didanosine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the algin. And loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding any algin supplement.

What Is Didanosine Used For?

  • Didanosine is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Didanosine is in a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although didanosine does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting (spreading) the HIV virus to other people.
