ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Gentian Violet (OTC drug)
Gentian Violet (OTC drug) falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with algin (the seaweed fiber found in some heartburn products) and oral gentian violet. Algin is a soluble fiber that swells into a thick gel in the gut. In theory, that gel could grab onto a medicine you swallow at the same time and slightly lower how much gets absorbed. For gentian violet taken by mouth (sometimes used for thrush or other infections), that could mean a touch less of it reaches where it's working.
Honestly, this is a theoretical, minor concern based on lab data, not real cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your gentian violet first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the algin. Still, run it by your pharmacist to be sure it fits your situation.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Gentian Violet (OTC drug) page
“Gentian violet is the purple over-the-counter dye used against thrush and fungal skin infections, and its supplement list deserves genuine care, not a quick skim. Twenty ingredients interact, and the lone major one, activated charcoal, should be your starting point: it soaks up many medicines and can cut the amount that reaches the body.”

About Algin
What is Algin?
- Heartburn and acid reflux (in combination products)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Digestive health and feeling full
- Use as a thickener and binder in foods and medicines
- Weight management
Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
