Isosorbide Dinitrate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern with isosorbide dinitrate is purely about timing of absorption. That gel could, in theory, grab onto your tablet and slow how much of it gets into your bloodstream. If less drug is absorbed, your angina protection might not be as strong, meaning chest pain could sneak through when you exert yourself.

I want to stress this is theoretical, based on lab work and how fiber behaves, not on real cases with this medicine. To stay on the safe side, take your isosorbide first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any algin supplement. Food amounts are very unlikely to matter. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist.

What Is Isosorbide Used For?

Brand names: Isordil, Angitak, Cedocard Retard, Isoket Retard, Isoket

Isosorbide is used to prevent angina pectoris — chest pain or tightness caused by coronary artery disease. Both isosorbide dinitrate tablets and isosorbide mononitrate tablets (including Monoket and Isordil) are used for this purpose.

Important: none of these oral formulations work fast enough to stop a chest pain episode that has already started. They are taken on a schedule to prevent angina, not to treat it in the moment.
