Mifepristone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin (the seaweed fiber found in some heartburn products) forms a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel could trap a swallowed pill like mifepristone (Korlym) and keep your body from absorbing all of it. If less gets absorbed, the medicine may not block cortisol as well, which could mean your blood sugar isn't as well controlled. Mifepristone is not a prodrug, so this is about absorption, not activation.

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real-world reports, and it's rated minor. A safe habit is to space them out, taking algin 30 to 60 minutes after your mifepristone. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Is Mifepristone (Korlym) Used For?

Brand names: Mifeprex, Korlym

Korlym is prescribed for adults with endogenous Cushing's syndrome — a condition where the body produces too much cortisol — who also have type 2 diabetes or trouble controlling blood sugar. It works to bring those blood sugar levels under control.

It is only for blood sugar problems that are directly caused by Cushing's syndrome. It should not be used to treat ordinary type 2 diabetes unrelated to this condition.
