Naldemedine Tosylate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. Because of that gel, there's a theoretical concern that taking algin at the same time as Symproic (naldemedine) could trap a bit of the tablet and slow or reduce how much your body absorbs. If less gets in, your naldemedine might work less well, meaning your opioid-related constipation could come back. Naldemedine is not a prodrug, so this is purely about absorption, not how it's activated.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how fiber behaves, not strong human studies. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your naldemedine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any algin. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

What Is Naldemedine Used For?

Brand name: Symproic

Symproic (naldemedine) is used to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) — constipation caused by opioid pain medications — in adults with chronic non-cancer pain. This includes people living with chronic pain related to prior cancer or its treatment, as long as they do not need frequent opioid dose increases (such as weekly adjustments).

It is not a general constipation remedy. Symproic works specifically against the constipating effect of opioids and should be stopped if you stop taking your opioid pain medication.
