Pirfenidone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a gel-forming seaweed fiber, and when it's in your stomach at the same time as pirfenidone (Esbriet), it could in theory grab onto the drug and slow or slightly lessen how much your body absorbs. Pirfenidone is active as-is (it's not a prodrug), so the concern would be getting a little less of it, which might mean a bit less benefit for your lung fibrosis.

I want to be honest that this is only a theoretical worry based on how algin behaves, not something proven with pirfenidone specifically. To stay on the safe side, a simple spacing trick helps: take your pirfenidone first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any algin product. And always run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding the supplement.

Pirfenidone — available as capsules and tablets under the brand name Esbriet, as well as generic pirfenidone products — is indicated for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a chronic, progressive disease in which scar tissue builds up in the lungs and makes breathing increasingly difficult.

Esbriet capsules and tablets, pirfenidone capsules, and pirfenidone tablets are each specifically approved for IPF. No other uses are supported by the available product labels.
