Sunitinib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is basically a soluble seaweed fiber that soaks up water and forms a thick gel in your stomach. When you swallow your sunitinib (Sutent) capsule around the same time, that gel could, in theory, trap a little of the medicine and keep your body from absorbing all of it. Sunitinib is an active cancer drug (not a prodrug that needs activating), so absorbing less could mean a slightly weaker effect against your tumor.

Now, I want to be honest about how strong this concern is: it's theoretical, based mostly on lab work, and rated minor. Still, with a cancer drug you really don't want guesswork. An easy fix is spacing them out, taking algin 30 to 60 minutes after your sunitinib. Please run this by your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Sunitinib Used For?

Brand name: Sutent

Sunitinib malate capsules and Sutent capsules are both approved to treat adult patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) after the cancer has progressed on or could not be tolerated with imatinib mesylate. Both are also used for advanced renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer) and as adjuvant (preventive) treatment after surgery for adults at high risk of kidney cancer coming back. Additionally, both treat progressive, well-differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNET) that cannot be surgically removed or have spread.
