American Elder and Flibanserin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Flibanserin

Flibanserin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group American Elder interacts with.

Theoretically, taking American elder might increase levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that American elder inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear flibanserin out of your system. In test-tube studies, American elder appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, flibanserin could build up higher than expected, which may bump up its known side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, tiredness, and a drop in blood pressure that can cause fainting, especially if you also drink alcohol.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only based on lab research, not on people, so it's theoretical at this point. Cooked elderberry in a syrup or tea is unlikely to do much, but concentrated extracts are more of a question mark. Before pairing them, run it past your pharmacist or doctor.

About American Elder

What is American Elder?

American Elder
  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Immune support
  • Fever and congestion (traditional)
  • Constipation (traditional)
  • Antioxidant support

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

About Flibanserin

What Is Flibanserin Used For?

Brand name: Addyi

Addyi is approved to treat acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) — a condition where low sexual desire causes significant distress or relationship difficulty — in women under 65. "Acquired" means the low desire developed after a period of normal desire; "generalized" means it happens regardless of the situation or partner.

Addyi is not intended for use in men, and it is not a sexual performance enhancer. It is also not meant for HSDD that is caused by a medical condition, a psychiatric condition, relationship problems, or another medication.
