Here's something worth knowing about tamoxifen: it's actually a prodrug, meaning your body has to convert it into its active form (endoxifen) before it can do its job of fighting breast cancer. The main enzyme that handles part of that conversion is CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that American elder might slow CYP3A4 down a bit.

In theory, blocking that enzyme could shift how much active drug you make, which is why I'd rather you not guess on your own. That said, this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, so the worry is fairly mild. A small bowl of properly cooked elderberries is very different from concentrated extract capsules. Because tamoxifen is so important, please run any elder supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

What Is Tamoxifen Used For?

Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox

Tamoxifen is used to treat estrogen receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer in both women and men, and as follow-up (adjuvant) therapy after surgery for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.

In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS — an early, non-invasive breast change) following surgery and radiation, tamoxifen lowers the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Both Tamoxifen Citrate tablets and Soltamox oral solution share these indications.
