American mistletoe contains phoratoxin, a compound toxic to humans that induces smooth muscle contraction and vasoconstriction, potentially increasing blood pressure and heart rate. Case reports of cardiotoxicity have been documented with American mistletoe, and it should not be used with antihypertensive drugs or by individuals with cardiac conditions. American mistletoe is uncommon in dietary supplements, and formulations containing it are generally homeopathic. European mistletoe, which lacks phoratoxin, is more commonly used.

Here's the short version: American mistletoe works against your trandolapril, not with it. Trandolapril (Mavik) is meant to relax and widen your blood vessels so your blood pressure comes down. But American mistletoe contains a toxin called phoratoxin that does the opposite, it can tighten blood vessels and push blood pressure and heart rate up. So taking the two together could blunt the benefit you're getting and undo some of your blood pressure control.

On top of that, this plant has been linked to heart toxicity in case reports, which is a real concern if you're on heart or blood pressure medicine. The good news is American mistletoe is rare in supplements (mostly homeopathic). I'd simply avoid it and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure what's in a product.

About Trandolapril

What Is Trandolapril Used For?

Brand name: Mavik

Trandolapril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). They can be used on their own or combined with other blood pressure medicines such as hydrochlorothiazide.

Trandolapril tablets are also used in stable patients who have reduced heart pumping function (left-ventricular systolic dysfunction) or heart failure that developed within the first few days after a heart attack. In Caucasian patients, trandolapril has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular death and reduce hospitalizations related to heart failure.
