Oxaliplatin falls under Antineoplastics — the group American Pawpaw interacts with.

American pawpaw (Asimina triloba) contains Annonacin, a natural compound that has been investigated for its potential anticancer effects. Laboratory studies suggest that Annonacin may inhibit or prevent the growth and spread of tumors or malignant cells by disrupting mitochondrial function, leading to cell death (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6672878/; https://www.nature.com/articles/s41419-018-0772-x). It is currently unknown how American pawpaw may interact, if at all, with prescription antineoplastic drugs. However, since both Annonacin and antineoplastic drugs can affect cell processes and metabolism, there is a theoretical risk of interactions that could affect treatment efficacy or increase the risk of side effects. Therefore, caution should be exercised when combining pawpaw with prescription antineoplastic drugs, and consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended before making changes to your medication regimen.

Here's the honest picture: we don't really know how American pawpaw and oxaliplatin behave together in the body. The concern is mostly theoretical. Pawpaw's acetogenins (like annonacin) can disrupt how cells make energy in their mitochondria, and oxaliplatin is a powerful chemo drug that already works by damaging and killing cells. Stacking two things that both push on cell survival could, in theory, change how well your chemo works or add to side effects like nausea, fatigue, cold-triggered nerve tingling in the hands and feet, and low blood counts.

Because the evidence here is weak (lab studies only, no solid human data), I wouldn't panic. But while you're on cancer treatment, please don't add pawpaw without first clearing it with your oncologist or pharmacist.

However, strong human evidence for any health benefit is lacking, and the seeds, bark, and unripe parts can be toxic, so supplements should be used cautiously and only under professional guidance.

About Oxaliplatin Injection

What Is Oxaliplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Eloxatin

Oxaliplatin Injection is used in combination with two other drugs — fluorouracil and leucovorin — to treat colon and colorectal cancers. It is approved for adjuvant treatment (treatment after surgery to lower the chance of cancer returning) of stage III colon cancer in patients who have had the tumor completely removed.

It is also used to treat advanced colorectal cancer (cancer that has spread or cannot be cured with surgery alone). In both settings, oxaliplatin is always given as part of a combination regimen — it is not used alone.
