Angelica Archangelica and Flutamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

Photosensitizing Drugs

Why this applies to Flutamide

Flutamide falls under Photosensitizing Drugs — the group Angelica Archangelica interacts with.

Angelica archangelica, whether ingested or applied to the skin, has the potential to induce photosensitivity reactions. It is advised that patients using Angelica archangelica in any form should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. When combined with photosensitizing drugs like doxycycline, there is an elevated risk of photosensitivity reactions. Patients should be cautioned to take appropriate sun protection measures and monitor for any signs of skin irritation or photosensitivity when using these substances concomitantly. Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about this pairing. Flutamide can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you may sunburn faster or break out in a rash with less sun than usual. Angelica archangelica contains natural compounds called furanocoumarins that do the very same thing, so taking them together could stack up that sun-sensitivity effect.

This isn't about Angelica changing how your body processes flutamide. It's simply two things that both raise your sunburn risk, working in the same direction. The evidence here is fairly limited, so think of it as a reasonable caution rather than a major alarm. If you use Angelica in any form, be smart about sun protection: sunscreen, a hat, and covering up. And please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, since flutamide is part of an important cancer treatment.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Flutamide page

“A man taking flutamide (Eulexin) to block testosterone during prostate cancer treatment cannot afford big swings in the drug's level, and most of the 189 supplements on this page are capable of causing exactly that. The bulk of them work through the liver enzyme CYP3A4, which breaks flutamide down.”

About Angelica Archangelica

What is Angelica Archangelica?

Angelica Archangelica
  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anxiety and restlessness
  • Mild respiratory complaints
  • Flavoring in foods and drinks

Angelica archangelica is a tall aromatic herb used traditionally for digestive complaints, poor appetite, and to flavor foods and liqueurs. Solid human evidence for its health benefits is limited, and its skin-sensitizing furanocoumarins mean caution is warranted. Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone considering it should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
