Angelica Archangelica and Pyrazinamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

Photosensitizing Drugs

Why this applies to Pyrazinamide

Pyrazinamide falls under Photosensitizing Drugs — the group Angelica Archangelica interacts with.

Angelica archangelica, whether ingested or applied to the skin, has the potential to induce photosensitivity reactions. It is advised that patients using Angelica archangelica in any form should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. When combined with photosensitizing drugs like doxycycline, there is an elevated risk of photosensitivity reactions. Patients should be cautioned to take appropriate sun protection measures and monitor for any signs of skin irritation or photosensitivity when using these substances concomitantly. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing this herb with pyrazinamide: both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Pyrazinamide, one of your TB medicines, is already known to cause photosensitivity in some people, meaning you may sunburn faster or develop a rash on sun-exposed skin. Angelica archangelica carries natural compounds called furanocoumarins that do the same thing, so using them together could add up and raise your chances of a reaction.

This isn't about the drug building up or losing strength, it's a skin and sun issue. The evidence here is fairly limited, so don't panic. Just practice good sun protection (sunscreen, hat, covered skin) and watch for redness or irritation. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pyrazinamide page

“Pyrazinamide is one of the core tuberculosis drugs, and because treatment runs for months while the liver already carries the drug's own strain, the 102 supplements and herbs on file here warrant real caution. Thirty-eight of them add their own liver stress, and three of the four major-rated entries sit in that group, including somethi…”

About Angelica Archangelica

What is Angelica Archangelica?

Angelica Archangelica
  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anxiety and restlessness
  • Mild respiratory complaints
  • Flavoring in foods and drinks

Angelica archangelica is a tall aromatic herb used traditionally for digestive complaints, poor appetite, and to flavor foods and liqueurs. Solid human evidence for its health benefits is limited, and its skin-sensitizing furanocoumarins mean caution is warranted. Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone considering it should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
