Here's the simple version: anise seed may have its own mild blood-sugar-lowering effect. In one small human study, anise seed powder dropped fasting blood sugar by about 36%. Since Canagliflozin (Invokana) is already working to lower your glucose by helping your kidneys flush out sugar, stacking the two could push your numbers down a little too far.

If that happens, you might notice signs of low blood sugar like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. The good news is this is still mostly theoretical, and the anise you'd get in a tea or as a cooking spice is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated anise supplements taken daily are the bigger question mark. If you want to use anise regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
