Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Darunavir, Ritonavir
Darunavir, Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this one. Your combo of darunavir with ritonavir is an HIV treatment, and both of these are processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In fact, the ritonavir is added on purpose to block that enzyme and keep darunavir levels high enough to work. Lab studies (done in cells, not people) suggest astaxanthin might do the opposite and rev that enzyme up a bit.
If that happened in real life, it could theoretically lower your drug levels, and with HIV medicines, keeping levels steady really matters for keeping the virus controlled. That said, this has never been shown in humans, so the concern is mostly theoretical. Still, before adding astaxanthin, please run it by your pharmacist or HIV provider first.

About Astaxanthin
What is Astaxanthin?
- Antioxidant support
- Skin health and aging
- Eye health
- Exercise recovery
- Heart and inflammation support
Astaxanthin is a reddish carotenoid pigment with strong antioxidant activity in the lab, and it is widely promoted for skin, eye, heart, and exercise benefits. Early human studies are promising for a few uses, but the overall evidence is still limited and not strong enough to make firm claims. It appears generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
