Desogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.

Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your birth control pill, Ortho-Cept (desogestrel with ethinyl estradiol), is processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest astaxanthin might speed that enzyme up a little. If it did, your body could clear the hormones a bit faster, which in theory could lower their levels and, at the extreme, make the pill less reliable at preventing pregnancy. You might also notice things like breakthrough spotting.

Here's the reassuring part: this comes only from cell and lab research, not from real people taking both together. It's a theoretical concern, not a proven one. Still, because an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before starting astaxanthin, so you can decide together.
