This combination product packs two ingredients that already slow you down: hydrocodone (an opioid pain reliever and cough suppressant) and chlorpheniramine (a sedating antihistamine). Add beer to the mix and you're piling alcohol on top of two things that already make you drowsy. The result can be heavier than you'd expect, with deep sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, and slowed breathing being the real worry with the opioid part.

Alcohol can also slow how your body clears some of these drugs, letting them build up a bit. This is a well-recognized, serious pairing, so please don't drink beer while taking Tussend. If you'd like to enjoy a drink, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safe timing first.

This combo medicine (Tussend) carries hydrocodone, an opioid cough suppressant, plus an antihistamine and a decongestant. Drinking beer alongside it is a real concern. Alcohol can slow how your body breaks down the opioid, so more of it lingers in your system. On top of that, both alcohol and hydrocodone calm the brain, so their sedating effects stack up.

The result can be heavier drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and slowed breathing, which in larger amounts can be dangerous. The chlorpheniramine piece adds even more sleepiness. A single light beer is a smaller worry than larger amounts, but the safest move is to avoid alcohol while taking this. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor about what is safe for you.

About Beer

What is Beer?

Beer
  • Social and recreational drinking
  • Relaxation
  • Heart health (popular belief)
  • Bone health (popular belief)
  • Source of antioxidants and B vitamins

Beer is an alcoholic beverage that contains some minerals, B vitamins, and plant compounds from hops and grain, but it is not a health supplement. Any possible benefits come only from light-to-moderate intake, and they are easily outweighed by the well-known harms of alcohol. The safest amount of alcohol for health is none, and beer should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
