Beta-carotene + Dexamethasone
Dexamethasone brand names: Decadron, Hexadrol, Dexone, Ozurdex, Dexycu, and others.
We found no known interaction between Beta-carotene and Dexamethasone in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
Beta-carotene and Dexamethasone
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Dexamethasone and Beta-carotene in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding ratings are from Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) — the full detail is in the Special populations card below. Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.
Why No Interaction Is Listed for Dexamethasone
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Dexamethasone is filed under 8 classifications — including corticosteroids, cytochrome p450 2b6 (cyp2b6) substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) inducers. Beta-carotene has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being niacin (minor) — and none of Dexamethasone’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
Beta-carotene Does Interact With Other Medications
Beta-carotene has 3 minor known drug interactions in our database — Dexamethasone isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Beta-carotene or Dexamethasone, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Dexamethasone
This page covers Beta-carotene only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Dexamethasone page lists 221 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Grapefruit (major), Lily-of-the-valley (major), St. John's Wort (major) and Acacia Rigidula (moderate).

Where Beta-carotene and Dexamethasone Sit Against Everything Else
Out of every supplement and medication people look up on HelloPharmacist, here is where these two land this week — and which way each has been moving.

Where does our data come from?
- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every Beta-carotene reference on this page ↓
- Freshness: we automatically re-check this combination every week — this pair was last verified September 20, 2026. The Beta-carotene and Dexamethasone records this page draws on were last updated July 10, 2026.
- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About Beta-carotene
What is Beta-carotene?
- Vitamin A source
- Eye and vision health
- Antioxidant support
- Skin health
- General wellness
Beta-carotene is a plant pigment that the body can convert into vitamin A and that also acts as an antioxidant. Getting it from colorful fruits and vegetables is considered safe and healthy, but high-dose supplements have been linked to a higher lung cancer risk in smokers and people exposed to asbestos, so most people should not take large amounts.
Pigment found in colorful fruits and vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens) · Capsules, softgels, tablets, multivitamins, and as a food coloring
An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Beta-carotene is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Beta-carotene record says about it on its own.
Beta-carotene: dosing
There is no single agreed-upon supplement dose of beta-carotene for general health, and many experts recommend getting it from food rather than pills. Supplement amounts in products vary widely. If you choose to take a beta-carotene supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount. Avoid high doses, especially if you smoke.

About Dexamethasone
What Is Dexamethasone Used For?
Brand names: Decadron, Hexadrol, Dexone, Ozurdex, Dexycu, Hemady, Dextenza
Dexamethasone is used to treat a wide range of conditions depending on the form and route. Oral tablets and solutions treat severe allergic reactions (such as asthma, contact dermatitis, and seasonal allergic rhinitis), inflammatory skin diseases, endocrine disorders including adrenal insufficiency and congenital adrenal hyperplasia, gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis and regional enteritis, blood disorders, rheumatic conditions, kidney disease, and respiratory conditions including tuberculosis complications. Hemady (oral tablet) is specifically approved, in combination with other medicines, for multiple myeloma in adults. TaperDex (6-day and 12-day oral tablet packs) are used for the same broad range of allergic, inflammatory, and endocrine conditions.
Injectable forms (intramuscular and intravenous) are used when oral treatment is not possible, covering endocrine emergencies, shock, rheumatic disorders, and more. Eye-specific products treat different conditions: Dextenza (intracanalicular insert) treats eye inflammation and pain after eye surgery and itching from allergic conjunctivitis. Ozurdex (intravitreal implant) treats macular edema from retinal vein occlusion and diabetic macular edema, and non-infectious uveitis in the back of the eye. Dexycu (intraocular injection) treats inflammation after eye surgery. Maxidex (ophthalmic suspension) and dexamethasone sodium phosphate eye drops treat steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eye. The ophthalmic/otic solution also treats steroid-responsive inflammation of the outer ear canal. A topical ointment (Seacall) is used for skin conditions including contact dermatitis, eczema, and neurodermatitis.

Dexamethasone Is Linked to Lower Levels of 8 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Dexamethasone as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Beta-carotene — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
