Why this applies to Carboplatin

Carboplatin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Here's the practical wrinkle for carboplatin: it's a chemotherapy drug given through an IV at an infusion center, not something you swallow as a pill. The interaction on file is about how psyllium fiber can grab onto and change the absorption of oral medicines in your gut. Since carboplatin goes straight into your bloodstream, the fiber gel in your bowel never has a chance to interfere with it.

So for the carboplatin itself, this is really a non-issue. That said, psyllium can affect any other pills you take by mouth, so a good habit is to separate fiber from those by about 30 to 60 minutes. And because you're going through cancer treatment, please run any new supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

Black psyllium is a soluble-fiber supplement made from the seeds of a Plantago plant, used mostly to ease constipation and support digestive health. It is best known and most studied for relieving constipation and may modestly help lower cholesterol, but it must always be taken with plenty of water. What Is Carboplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Paraplatin

Carboplatin Injection is used to treat advanced ovarian cancer. It is approved for use as part of an initial combination chemotherapy regimen — one established combination pairs it with cyclophosphamide. It has also been used as a single agent in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer after prior treatment.

Because two brands are available — Kyxata and Paraplatin — your care team will specify which product you receive. Both are given by intravenous (IV) infusion in a clinical setting under the supervision of a physician experienced in cancer chemotherapy.
