Peginterferon alfa-2a, Ribavirin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Here's something that may put your mind at ease. The fiber gel in black psyllium can sometimes grab onto medicines you swallow and slow or reduce how much your body absorbs. But peginterferon alfa-2a (Pegasys) is given as an injection under the skin, not a pill, so the psyllium in your gut won't interfere with it at all.

The part to think about is ribavirin, which you do take by mouth. In theory, taking psyllium too close to your dose could affect how well ribavirin is absorbed, and that matters because it works to clear the hepatitis C virus. The simple fix is spacing: take your ribavirin first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. This is a minor, theoretical concern, but check the timing with your pharmacist to be safe.

Black psyllium is a soluble-fiber supplement made from the seeds of a Plantago plant, used mostly to ease constipation and support digestive health. It is best known and most studied for relieving constipation and may modestly help lower cholesterol, but it must always be taken with plenty of water. About Peginterferon Alfa-2a Injection

What Is Peginterferon Alfa-2a Injection Used For?

Brand names: Pegasys, Pegetron

Pegasys is used to treat chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in adults with compensated (stable) liver disease, typically in combination with other hepatitis C antiviral drugs. It is also approved for children 5 years and older with CHC in combination with ribavirin. Pegasys monotherapy (alone) is only an option when other HCV drugs cannot be used due to contraindications or serious intolerance.

Pegasys is also used to treat chronic hepatitis B (CHB) — both HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative types — in adults with compensated liver disease and evidence of active viral replication and liver inflammation. For children, Pegasys is approved for HBeAg-positive CHB in non-cirrhotic patients 3 years of age and older.
