Why this applies to Tazemetostat Hydrobromide

Tazemetostat Hydrobromide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Here's the gist with black psyllium and Tazverik (tazemetostat): psyllium is a soluble fiber that forms a thick gel in your gut, and that gel can sometimes grab onto pills as they pass through. The concern is purely about timing of absorption, not about how your body breaks the drug down. Tazemetostat is an active medication (not a prodrug), so the worry is simply that the fiber gel could bind some of it and lower how much you actually absorb, which in theory could mean less benefit from your cancer treatment.

The good news is this is rated minor and mostly theoretical. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your tazemetostat first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. Please run this by your oncology pharmacist or doctor so your dosing stays on track.

What Is Tazemetostat Used For?

Brand name: Tazverik

Tazverik (tazemetostat) tablets are used to treat adults and patients aged 16 and older with metastatic or locally advanced epithelioid sarcoma (a rare soft-tissue cancer) that cannot be completely removed by surgery.

Tazverik is also used in adults with relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma — meaning the lymphoma has come back or stopped responding to treatment — either when the tumor carries a specific EZH2 gene mutation (confirmed by an FDA-approved test) after at least two prior treatments, or when there are no other satisfactory treatment options. Both uses were approved based on response rates, and continued approval may depend on results from ongoing confirmatory studies.
