Here's the short version: Eculizumab (Soliris) works by quieting part of your immune system (it blocks a piece of the complement pathway) to protect your red blood cells, kidneys, or nerves, depending on why you're taking it. The concern with black seed is that some lab and animal studies hint it could nudge the immune system, in some cases revving it up and in others calming it down. If it stirred up immune activity, it could in theory work against what Soliris is trying to do.

But please don't lose sleep over this. This is only a theoretical worry from test-tube and animal research, not from people taking these together, and the evidence even points in both directions. Food-amount black seed in cooking is very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are simply less studied. Since Soliris is a serious medicine for a serious condition, just run any black seed supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but supplement-strength doses are less studied, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take other medicines.

About Eculizumab Injection

What Is Eculizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Soliris

Soliris (eculizumab) injection is approved to treat four serious conditions: paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), a rare blood disorder that causes red blood cell destruction; atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), a condition that causes abnormal blood clotting in small blood vessels; generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), a neuromuscular disease causing muscle weakness; and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), an inflammatory disease affecting the optic nerves and spinal cord.

For gMG, Soliris is approved for adults and children 6 years and older who test positive for anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies. For NMOSD, Soliris is approved for adults who test positive for anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies. Soliris is not indicated for hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC-HUS).
