Black Seed and Prednisone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Prednisone

Prednisone falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Black Seed interacts with.

Theoretically, black seed might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Animal and in vitro studies suggest that black seed might stimulate immune function. However, other animal studies suggest that black seed may suppress immune function.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with black seed and prednisone. Prednisone is a steroid that works partly by calming down your immune system, which is exactly why it's used for things like arthritis flares, asthma, lupus, and allergic reactions. The concern on file is more of a theoretical tug-of-war: some lab and animal studies hint that black seed might rev the immune system up, while other studies suggest it might quiet it down. If it nudges your immune system the wrong way, it could in theory work against what prednisone is trying to do.

The honest takeaway is that this comes from test-tube and animal research, not from people, so we really don't know how it plays out in real life. Sprinkling black seed on food is unlikely to matter much, but concentrated supplement doses are a bigger question mark. If you take prednisone for a serious condition, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a black seed supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prednisone page

“Prednisone (Deltasone) suppresses the immune system to control inflammation, and that mechanism shapes most of what can go wrong on this 208-ingredient list, which I read as one to approach carefully rather than casually. Four entries rate major.”

About Black Seed

What is Black Seed?

Black Seed
  • Respiratory support (asthma, allergies, cough)
  • Digestive upset
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar and cholesterol support
  • General inflammation

Black seed (Nigella sativa) is a traditional spice and remedy that has been studied for asthma, blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, with early research showing some promise but no firmly proven benefits. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but supplement-strength doses are less studied, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take other medicines.
