Blood Irradiation Therapy and Albiglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Albiglutide

Albiglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Blood Irradiation Therapy interacts with.

Preliminary clinical research and one case report suggest that blood irradiation therapy may lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, concomitant use with antidiabetes drugs might affect glucose control and increase the risk of hypoglycemia; use with caution. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary.
Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: albiglutide (Tanzeum) is a once-weekly injection that helps your body release insulin and lowers blood sugar. The thinking here is that blood irradiation therapy might also nudge blood sugar downward. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, push your glucose lower than intended, which raises the odds of hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, or feeling weak).

I want to be honest about how thin the evidence is. This is theoretical, based on early research and a single case report, not solid proof. Albiglutide on its own carries a fairly low hypoglycemia risk unless you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Still, if you're considering this therapy, loop in your doctor or pharmacist first so they can watch your sugars and adjust if needed. Please don't change your diabetes medicine on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Albiglutide page

“People injecting albiglutide (Tanzeum) once a week for type 2 diabetes are often the same people eyeing supplements marketed for blood sugar, and that overlap is exactly where this list calls for real vigilance. Every one of the 239 ingredients on file touches glucose control in some way, most by adding to albiglutide's glucose-lowerin…”

About Blood Irradiation Therapy

What is Blood Irradiation Therapy?

  • Chronic infections
  • Immune support
  • Fatigue and general wellness
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Circulatory complaints

Blood Irradiation Therapy is a medical procedure—not a dietary supplement or herb—in which blood is exposed to ultraviolet or laser light, either outside the body and re-infused or by an intravenous light device. It is not approved by the U.S. FDA for treating any disease, and high-quality evidence supporting modern claims is very limited. If you are considering it, talk with a qualified physician and treat any clinic marketing it for serious illness with strong caution.
