Blood Irradiation Therapy and Piroxicam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Piroxicam

Piroxicam falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Blood Irradiation Therapy interacts with.

Preliminary clinical research suggests that blood irradiation therapy might reduce platelet aggregation. Case reports also suggest that blood irradiation therapy may be associated with an increased risk of nasal bleeding. Theoretically, blood irradiation therapy might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Piroxicam is an NSAID, and like other drugs in that family, it already nudges your platelets toward being a little less sticky, which is part of why NSAIDs can raise bleeding risk on their own. Blood irradiation therapy has been suggested, mostly on a theoretical basis, to also reduce how well platelets clump together, with a few case reports of nosebleeds.

So the worry is that stacking the two could add up and make bleeding or bruising more likely. Watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, dark or bloody stools, or stomach upset. To be clear, this is theoretical and not proven, so don't panic. Just loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them so they can weigh it for your situation.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Piroxicam page

“Piroxicam (Feldene) is a potent, long-acting NSAID for arthritis pain, and since it already carries real stomach-bleeding risk on its own, my honest read is that this page calls for genuine caution rather than a quick skim. Most of the 285 interacting supplements share a single problem: they thin the blood or blunt platelets, stacking…”

About Blood Irradiation Therapy

What is Blood Irradiation Therapy?

  • Chronic infections
  • Immune support
  • Fatigue and general wellness
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Circulatory complaints

Blood Irradiation Therapy is a medical procedure—not a dietary supplement or herb—in which blood is exposed to ultraviolet or laser light, either outside the body and re-infused or by an intravenous light device. It is not approved by the U.S. FDA for treating any disease, and high-quality evidence supporting modern claims is very limited. If you are considering it, talk with a qualified physician and treat any clinic marketing it for serious illness with strong caution.
