Mestranol, Norethynodrel falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Buchu interacts with.

Buchu contains pulegone, a known hepatotoxin. There is some concern that buchu may adversely affect the liver, especially when the leaf is used in large doses or the oil is ingested. Theoretically, concomitant use with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage. Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (Tricor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo)

Here's the gist with Enovid-E (mestranol with norethynodrel), an older combined oral contraceptive. The concern isn't about your birth control working better or worse. It's about the liver. Buchu contains a compound called pulegone, which in large amounts (especially the concentrated oil) can be hard on liver cells. Estrogen-containing pills like this one are also processed by, and can occasionally stress, the liver.

Stacking two things that lean on the liver could, in theory, raise the risk of liver irritation. I'll be honest though: this is based on pharmacology and lab clues, not real patient cases, so it's a fairly soft, theoretical concern. Casual culinary or tea amounts of buchu are far less worrisome than concentrated oils or capsules. If you notice yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, check in promptly. Please run any buchu use past your pharmacist or doctor first.
