Here's the gist: phenylephrine works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors, which tightens blood vessels to raise blood pressure or shrink swollen nasal tissue. Lab and animal studies hint that butcher's broom may act on those same alpha receptors. So in theory, taking the two together could nudge phenylephrine's effects a little higher, meaning a bit more of a blood pressure bump, headache, a pounding or racing heart feeling, or jitteriness.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based on pharmacology and test-tube work, not on real people, so it's more of a maybe than a proven problem. Still, if you take phenylephrine and want to add butcher's broom, especially if you have high blood pressure or heart concerns, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
