Budenoside falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Calamus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
In vitro research shows that calamus extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme.

Here's the short version for budesonide: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down. Lab studies suggest calamus may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, more budesonide could linger in your system than expected, which over time can nudge up the usual steroid side effects, things like fluid retention, easy bruising, higher blood sugar, or even effects on your body's own cortisol.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not actual human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger issue is that calamus itself contains beta-asarone, which the FDA banned from foods over safety worries. I'd skip the calamus, and please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing any supplement with your budesonide.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints.
