This combo product pairs meprobamate (a calming, anti-anxiety medicine) with tridihexethyl, an anticholinergic that calms an overactive gut by blocking acetylcholine. Here's the idea behind the interaction: calamus appears to block an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which normally breaks down acetylcholine. Less breakdown means more acetylcholine hanging around, and that can work against the tridihexethyl part, potentially making it less effective for cramping, stomach spasms, or related symptoms.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from lab (test tube) studies, not from people, so it's largely theoretical. Even so, calamus carries real safety concerns of its own and is best avoided. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
