Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the gist for Panobinostat (Farydak). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this cancer drug out of your system. In lab tests, calamus appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happens in people too, panobinostat could build up higher than intended, which may mean more of its known side effects, things like low blood counts, diarrhea, fatigue, and changes to your heart rhythm.

I'll be honest, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real patient data. Still, panobinostat is a potent chemo drug with a tight safety margin, so I wouldn't take chances. Calamus also has its own toxicity worries. Please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before combining the two.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Panobinostat Used For?

Brand name: Farydak

  • Panobinostat is used in combination with bortezomib (Velcade) and dexamethasone to treat people with multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) who have already been treated two other medications, including bortezomib (Velcade). Panobinostat is in a class of medications called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It works by killing cancer cells.
